What Kind Of Ticks Are Common in Lake Palestine, TX
Ticks are common parasitic pests that are found living and breeding across the United States; these parasites tend to feed on a wide variety of hosts giving them the unfortunate ability to carry a wide range of dangerous diseases and bacteria. In our area of East Texas the American dog tick, blacklegged tick, and brown dog tick are the most prevalent species found.
- Adult American dog ticks have flat, oval-shaped bodies that grow to about 1/8 inch in length, increasing in size after feeding. Their bodies are brown in color with white or yellow markings. American dog ticks are responsible for spreading diseases that can make people and pets sick including Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
- Brown dog ticks are reddish-brown in color and their bodies have a flattened oval shape. Before feeding, adults are about 1/8th of an inch long; after feeding they can expand to about 1/2 of an inch and turn more bluish-gray in color. Brown dog ticks prefer to feed on canine blood, but they do at times feed on people transmitting diseases like Rocky Mountain Spotted fever.
- Blacklegged Ticks (deer ticks) have a very small oval-shaped body that is brownish-orange in color, their black legs are darker in color than their body. Deer ticks are considered to be very dangerous to both people and pets because they spread several diseases including the potentially debilitating Lyme disease.
