Summer is in full swing, and that means mosquitoes are out in full force. Some conditions are more conductive than others in terms of attracting mosquitoes and helping them thrive. You can and should take steps to ensure that your home/yard is not a perfect breeding ground for these pests. If you’ve found that your property is under attack from mosquitoes, you don’t need to worry; there are steps you can take to rectify the situation.

Preventing Mosquitoes

If you are going outside to enjoy your yard and the mosquitoes on your property are forcing you to turn right back around and go back inside, you may think it’s too late to do anything about them. Thankfully, that is not the case. Here are a few tips to help reduce the population of these bothersome pests around your property and yard. Mosquitoes are attracted to water, as they need it to breed and survive. Eliminating standing water around your property can go a long way in reducing the number of mosquitoes you have.

  • Fix leaky hoses, dripping faucets, and clogged gutters to keep areas around your home and foundation dry
  • Water grass and gardens sparingly as to not create puddles of standing water
  • Empty your kiddie pools, bird baths, watering cans, buckets, pails, toys, and other water items that could hold water frequently – every day if you can
  • Keep grass cut short, bushes and trees trimmed back, and mulch around garden beds aerated as to not create unnecessary moisture

Mosquitoes also dislike strong plant smells and tend to avoid areas with these plants. Consider pots for decks and patios that contain lemongrass, catnip, lavender, basil, marigolds, or citronella plants for a quick fix. Also, consider adding these plants to your landscaping as a long-term deterrent.

Professional Mosquito Treatments

While our recommended DIY methods above will certainly help deter mosquitoes, it likely won’t get rid of a large mosquito issue in your yard. At Innovative Pest Control, we offer a mosquito control solution that is much more effective. The Outdoor Living Program targets mosquitoes and will help you keep the mosquito problem in your yard under control. The number of biting pests on your property will be greatly reduced by targeting the areas they like to breed as well as killing off living mosquitoes. We offer monthly treatments from April through September, the busiest time of the year for mosquitoes.

For either long-term or a one-time event, we will inspect your property, target areas where mosquitoes rest and breed, and will work to reduce the number of these annoying, disease-carrying pests from your property so you can enjoy the outdoors this summer.
