What threats do Asian tiger mosquitoes pose?
Asian tiger mosquitoes can carry dangerous viruses such as the West Nile and La Crosse encephalitis and are also potential carriers of the Zika virus which is a very serious illness that causes fever, headache, joint and muscle pain, rash, and has been linked to cause microcephaly in babies whose mothers were infected while they were pregnant. What do Asian tiger mosquitoes look like?
The Asian tiger mosquitoes look quite different than their cousins which are brown. Asian tiger mosquitoes have black and white tiger-like markings with a white stripe down the front of the heads and black and white bands on their legs. These mosquitoes are very small – usually no bigger than 1/4 of an inch long. Texas is the perfect place for these mosquitoes to take up residence, as the climate here offers them all of the conditions they need to thrive. The hot, humid environment reminds them of the tropical and subtropical climate they originated from in Asia. They are also attracted to any residential areas because of the various food sources and breeding ground opportunities in artificial water-holding sources such as water cans, rain barrels, bird baths, and kiddie pools. Any type of stagnant water is the ideal place for these mosquitoes to lay their eggs.
