Who doesn’t love cockroaches? Their slippery-looking exoskeletons are so aesthetically pleasing and their uncrushable bodies make them easy to hug. Of course, we are just joking. No one likes cockroaches, especially ones that sneak into homes. If you haven’t heard about cockroach season here in Texas, we have some very interesting things you are going to want to know.

When Does Cockroach Seasons Start?

This is a hard question to answer. Cockroach season doesn’t have a start date here in Texas, not because it is hard to predict, but because it never technically stops. Because we rarely see temperatures below freezing here in Texas, cockroaches are never threatened to the point where they stop being a problem. This means that cockroach season is year-round. What does this mean for you? It means you have to be extra vigilant to make sure cockroaches stay out of your home. One thing you should know is that although there is no cockroach season, they are much more active during the warmer summer months. As we head into summer, you might notice more of a cockroach presence on or around your property.

Why You Don’t Want Cockroaches In Your Home?

Although cockroaches aren’t noisy house guests, they have a tendency to get other people in the homes they are occupying rather sick. Able to spread over 33 different kinds of bacteria, 8 human pathogens, and 7 harmful parasites, cockroaches are about as dangerous as pests come. Additionally, cockroaches can inadvertently trigger asthma attacks with their shed skin and dirty up your home with their fecal matter. Unless you are ok with these serious risks, you are going to want to put in place some protection to make sure these dangerous pests are kept out of your home.

8 Ways You Can Deter Cockroaches

  1. Use a caulking gun to seal up openings in your home’s exterior foundation, gaps along window and door frames, and spacing around utility piping leading out of the home.
  2. Inspect your home’s screens, make sure they are rip and tear-free.
  3. Check your gutters and make sure they are in good working order.
  4. Fix leaks in and around your home.
  5. Store leftover foods inside airtight containers.
  6. Clean your home thoroughly and regularly.
  7. Pick up and clean out pet water and food bowls before going to bed at night.
  8. Declutter storage spaces and do your best to keep your home free of clutter.

The less food, water, and shelter cockroaches have around your home, the less likely they will be to stick around if they do get inside. Sealing up your home’s exterior greatly lessens their chances of being able to get inside in the first place. Combining these two things gives your home a good chance of keeping cockroaches away.
